Interview with Celebrity Designer Jason Christopher Peters
Tell me a little about yourself, where are you from?
I’m a Cali kid! I was born and raised in Chico, California!
What’s your educational background?
Well I did attend college but did not graduate. There is a really long story to that though that we will save for a later date! But did Kanye West graduate? Nope. And look how successful he is.
What does fashion mean to you and How would you define your city’s fashion?
I live in Manhattan New York and would define the city’s style as Eclectic. Unapologetic. Statement-Making. Everyday when I walk out of my apartment I love to explore the city and see all of the different unique and just beautiful people everywhere. The style, sophistication and just over all demeanor of a New Yorker is pretty dope! Everyone wears what they want and has no apologies for what they wear. I feel like living in such a beautiful city gives you the opportunity to really capture your own individual uniqueness and be you.
When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
I actually never really knew I was going to become a fashion designer. I have been sketching since I was 3 years old and my grandma/adoptive mom would always have me watch pageants with her, award shows and things that allowed my creative side really develop into what it is today. I initially went to school to become a lawyer and God definitely had a different plan and path for my life. When I was 18 everything really started happening in my life with fashion.
What was the first article of clothing you ever designed?
Well I think it was when I was about 8 years old or so. I remember going into my grams room and seeing all kinds of felt and Velcro in different colors. I remember making the front of an apron and cutting out different shapes and literally gluing them on it. I showed my grams it and she loved it. Its funny though because I guess I didn’t realize at the time I needed to make a back part to the piece, so basically it was just the front part of a crazy Avant Garde piece that was unfinished. Lol
How does designing jewelry/accessories differ from designing clothes?
It’s extremely different! I wouldn’t really say that a fashion designer and jewelry designer are the same career. They both inevitably are related to the industry in such a powerful and profound way but they differ greatly. Designing clothing and accessories are not the same thing at all. Although both types of creators use creative innovative process I think it is a bit more difficult to be a fashion designer then an accessory or jewelry designer.
How long does it usually take you to construct a piece?
It honestly depends. I’m a crazy Capricorn and I work very well under pressure so honestly I could probably get at 10-12 piece collection done in a week or two weeks depending on how crazy I get to design it. My last show in New York City, I was still creating and designing the night before!
Who is one of your favorite local models to work with?
I would have to say Paulene! She has been in every single one of my shows for the past year and is phenomenal! She transforms into any character instantaneously and has that WOW factor every single time that I work with her. The crowd always goes wild when she makes her presence known as a model. We have this saying “Slay or get slammed.”
Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of clothing.
Music is one of the most important things in my creative process. I usually go to the Meatpacking district, SOHO or Central Park and just listen to music and let the creative process flow. I use the music to relate to every day real situations in my life, I then think of how I can relate the two and intertwine them into a collection. When I design I always want to keep in mind my audience and there emotions. I want them to feel something and have strong emotions while watching any of my runway shows.
What are some of your accomplishments as a designer?
Getting asked personal by Betsey Johnson to be one of her interns after showing her a few of my designs at a meet and greet that she had in San Francisco Ca and being on the front page of the Times with her! Seeing my designs on Sammie from Jersey Shore on Barbara Walters’s most fascinating people of 2010 Interview & Receiving letters from Anna Wintour of Vogue to continue to pursue being a fashion designer. Those are three of my favorite moments! But seeing my designs being worn by celebrities around the world like Kat Deluna, Paris Hilton, Omarion and more is a great feeling!
Who are some of your favorite designers?
I am pretty obsessed with Jeremy Scott, Karl Lagerfeld and Tom Ford. Those are three powerful men!!! I absolutely adore them!!

It is a dope brand for guys and girls! http://www.boybeads.com/ There is a really dope boutique in Harlem called Vault Harlem! http://www.vaultharlem.com/ I am ALWAYS there literally! Usually by getting no sleep lol. I always get so anxious and overwhelmingly excited so I get no sleep that is how I prepare! To just stay up wired on Starbucks Chai Tea Lattes, Mike and Ikes and Taco Bell lol.
Do you prefer sketching designs or actually constructing them?
Both. The entire process is so beautiful and exciting.
Tell me about the process of sketching a design. What kind of paper and pencil/pen do you use?
Well since I am a crazy Capricorn I will grab whatever is near me and start sketching! I have sketches done on back of McDonalds receipts, magazines, Juicy fruit gum boxes. My mind is always thinking about creating and never stops so when I come up with an amazing idea, I have to grad whatever is near me and start sketching it out!
What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?
To work extremely hard! The industry is tough and you need a tough skin as well. But if your heart, mind, body and soul is truly into being an influential and inspiriting designer then go for it 200%!! NEVER EVER GIVE UP NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE TELLS YOU!!
What do you like best about designing clothes?
Everything! Being able to design every day just lights up my heart and soul and I am truly blessed by god to be a designer.
What do you dislike about designing clothes?
Nothing, except getting stuck by pins and needles.
I am ME and that’s what everyone needs to realize. Style isn’t about clothing, accessories or the glitz and the glam, its about YOU! You as a person is what style is. Each of us are beautiful people created in Gods image and to have style is something that each individual living around the world has. Each of us is what Style means and is. So my personal style is ME!
How would you define the style your line exemplifies?
My line can be defined as “Unapologetic. No Holds Bare. Take it or Leave it.” It is art. My line is art and influenced by cultures around the world with a heavy influence on pop culture and music.
What are some of your fashion goals?
To have my clothing lines in boutiques around the world, have a book, be in movies, continue modeling and eventually have my own modeling agency.

I get inspiration from the world and just being alive and experiencing every day life.
