Give me some basic information about yourself. Where are you from?

My name is Toby, 32 years old.

I live in  the Netherlands, in the southern part of the country.

Where did you go to high school?

I went to high school in Tilburg, after that I chose to study Tourism because I love to travel. This education was actually a double one, I combinated it with cooking classes.

What are some of your main interests and hobbies?

My main interest is seeing the world, meeting different cultures, going back to basic, see the beautifull things the world has to offer.

How would you describe your professional interests?

My professional interest is modelling. This also hangs together with meeting different people in the industry. The goal in every shoot or fashion show gives me a lot of energy.

What’s your background in modeling?

I started modelling about 4 years ago. A friend of mine told me I should get some pictures taken to send to an agency, this is how everything started.

Was it for the glamour? The money? Pure kicks?

I started more from a curiosity level and soon after that I had a goal, to get myself on a billboard with a great campaign!

Who are some of your favorite models and designers, and why?

I don t have any particular designer I like most. I really like to watch fashion shows on e.g. Fashion TV. Sometimes I like clothes a designes makes, but maybe the season after that it changes.

Which fashion magazines, websites, blogs, and catalogs do you visit most often?

When I read fashion magazine s, I read InStyle Magazine, Men’s Fashion and Vogue Men’s. On internet I look on GQ but I don t look that much on internet magazines, I like to look in a magazine more …

How would you describe your style? Consider anything and everything from color to historical eras and more.

My style is difficult to describe. I allways mix different styles, that s what I like most. Create my own style! I do like to look at the newest fashion but besides that It s nice to find you re own way in that.

I love to shop in small boutiques when I do city trips all over the world. Boutiques from unknown or upcoming designers but also from famous fashion brands. When I go shopping not very far from where I live, I love to go to Antwerp, Belgium. That s about a 40 minutes drive from Holland, where I live.

Out of all of the photos photographers have taken of you, which is your favorite and why?

I have one favourite picture, it was not an editorial one but a portfolio photoshoot. I have attached this picture as the first one in this e mail. This picture is a strong face. It gave me many compliments from agencies and potential clients.

What makes [your city’s] fashion unique?

My own creativity…..

What is fun and rewarding about modeling?

One of the nicer things are the goals and the actual results you make with a shoot or fashion show. After a whole day (or half day) work with a great team, you get the result you ve expected, that gives the most fun out of it. Also meeting new people from the business and the different and craziest places you visit.

What do you dislike about modeling?

Traffic jams when I need to travel by car to a shoot.

What advice do you have for other aspiring models?

before you harvest you need to sow… Nothing comes just like that.

How do you prepare for a modeling shoot?

These days it goes automatically. My small suitcase is always jumping in my room to get sorted.

Basic things (clothes) are always good to have prepared for a shooting.

How would you describe working with the photographer?

Every photographer is different, difficult to say. One will put you in place, the other expects you to be creative and move in a situation. It s always good and nice to have a connection and that you both know what the end result has to be.

What makes a stylish lady or man?

Everybody is unique in his or her own way. When you stand close to you re inner self you will show that from the outside, in everything, also the clothes you wear.

What distinguishes a good model from a bad one?

Nowadays, I don t know If it has always been like that, when someone has done one photo shoot, he or her calls him or herself a model. That’s something I find difficult sometimes. Not because of that reason but about how people are behaving. (arrogance)

What are some things you dislike/hate about the fashion industry?

I don’t like it when I have a fashion show and the dresser lost one of my clothes and I have only 30 seconds to get back on the catwalk hahah!

What makes [your city] a good shopping city?

The city where I live Is not a good shopping city. More reason for me to take my car and drive somewhere else to shop!

How could [your city’s] shopping be improved?

More nice small boutiques, different brand stores.

How has modeling changed other aspects of your life?

You get more self-confidence even though you get a lot of rejections. But you learn to cope with these things. I have met a lot of people in different countries, that made my knowledge of people even bigger.

Do you do your own hair and make-up?

When there is no make up artist or hairstylist, yes I do my own make up and hair.

What are some of the main differences between runway and photographic modeling?

Runway is most of the time about the clothes or accessories. Photographic modelling could be about almost everything.

Runway gives me a kick when walking the catwalk, a little stress behind the scenes haha! That s also different with photo shootings.

Describe the atmosphere when you’re on a shoot.

I m most of the time relaxed on the set, It will show when you re stressed out. Some music on, talk a little with the people you have to work with, that helps to break the ice. You do only have a little time to show what you ve got.

 Do you play music?

Yes I play music. Depends if there is music on the set.

Do you talk with the photographer between shots?

I do communicate with the photographer yes, I think that s important to see where you stand during the shoot and If it s getting where the clients wants it to be.

Anything else you’d like to say?

“The distance between you re dreams and reality is called action”
